INGREDIENTS

For the Cake:

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder

  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 cup milk

  • ½ cup vegetable oil

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 cup boiling water

For the Frosting:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened

  • ⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 3 cups powdered sugar

  • ⅓ cup milk (adjust as needed)

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat & prep:
Heat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round pans or line them with parchment paper.

  2. Mix dry ingredients:
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. Add wet ingredients:
Toss in sugar, eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix it all up until smooth.

  4. Add boiling water:
Slowly pour in the boiling water (don’t panic if it looks thin — that’s the secret to a moist cake).

  5. Bake:
Divide the batter evenly between your pans and bake for 30–35 minutes.
You’ll know it’s ready when a toothpick comes out clean.

  6. Cool it down:
Let the cakes cool in their pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

🍫 Make the Frosting

  1. Beat butter until creamy.

  2. Add cocoa powder and powdered sugar alternately with milk, mixing until smooth.

  3. Stir in vanilla extract.

  4. Frost the completely cooled cakes — layer them up, coat the top, and smooth out those edges.

💡 Tips

  • For extra decadence, drizzle melted chocolate over the top.

  • Add a pinch of espresso powder to the batter to intensify the chocolate flavor.

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container — it stays moist for up to 4 days!
